Orthodontics Q & A

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics includes treatments that shift your teeth into a straighter, more symmetrical, or better-aligned position. Naturally, you may have an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or any other type of malocclusion. You might also have specific features in your smile because of the positioning of your teeth, like wide gaps or overlapped teeth.

If you have tooth crookedness of any kind, the team at Comprehensive Dental Group can give you a pre-orthodontics consultation and decide on a suitable treatment plan. Orthodontic treatments are highly customizable to meet your goals and desires, and the outcome can even make it easier to clean your mouth of disease-causing bacteria.

What are my options for orthodontics?

Several orthodontic treatment options are widely used to straighten teeth in children, adolescents, and adults. Children who need orthodontics can start treatment early with phase I orthodontics, while more traditional options like braces are best for individuals with adult teeth only.

Your treatment at Comprehensive Dental Group may consist of:

Metal braces

Metal braces offer predictable results for individuals with crooked or misaligned teeth. Metal brackets attached to your teeth are connected by wires and bands that your orthodontist tightens regularly. You can have braces for 1-3 years, depending on the starting point of your teeth.

ClearCorrect is a custom system of transparent aligners that fit over your teeth. Each aligner pressures your teeth toward their new position, and they’re more discreet than braces. However, even though you can take them out at will, you must wear them for most of the day every day to stay on track with your treatment plan.

Expanders are devices that help treat crossbite. They’re fixed to your upper palate and designed to widen the upper jaw.

Phase I orthodontics

Phase I orthodontics includes early treatments for kids that minimize the need for orthodontic treatment in the future.

Phase II orthodontics

Phase II orthodontics completes the results of phase I and often include a short time with braces.

What comes after orthodontic treatment?

When you finish orthodontic treatments like those listed, there’s a possibility of your teeth shifting back into their original places.

To prevent this from happening, you need to get a retainer. The team at Comprehensive Dental Group fits you for a retainer that you need to wear at all times initially. Later, you can switch to wearing it only at night.

There are several types of retainers, and your orthodontist can help you choose the right one. A fixed retainer is permanently attached to the backsides of your teeth, while Hawley and Essix retainers are removable.

A Hawley retainer includes a plastic piece for the upper palate and wires that your orthodontist can adjust. An Essix retainer fits directly over the teeth.
